Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the palatine tonsils. This procedure is usually performed for recurrent throat infections, chronic tonsillitis, or when the tonsils become excessively enlarged and cause breathing and swallowing problems. This operation, which can be performed in both children and adults, is important for improving health and quality of life.
The purpose of tonsillectomy:

  • To prevent frequent recurrent tonsillitis and throat infections
  • To eliminate snoring and episodes of breathing cessation during sleep (apnea)
  • To reduce persistent sore throat, bad breath, and difficulty swallowing
  • To resolve problems caused by tonsil stones (tonsilloliths) and inflammation of the palatine tonsils

The procedure and recovery process:
Tonsillectomy is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 30–45 minutes. The operation is performed through the mouth, meaning there are no incisions on the skin or externally. During the procedure, both palatine tonsils are removed and bleeding is minimal.
The recovery process may vary individually, but most patients recover within 7–10 days. During this period, it is important to eat soft, lukewarm foods, drink plenty of fluids, and rest. Mild sore throat, referred ear pain, and difficulty swallowing may occur after surgery; this is normal and decreases within a few days.
Benefits of tonsillectomy:

  • Relief from recurrent throat infections
  • Improved breathing and swallowing functions
  • Reduced snoring and sleep disturbances
  • Elimination of bad breath and persistent throat discomfort

Adenoidectomy can often be performed together with tonsillectomy, as these two conditions frequently occur in parallel.
Who is it recommended for?
Tonsillectomy is especially recommended for:

  • Those who experience throat infections more than 4–5 times per year
  • Those who experience breathing pauses during sleep
  • Those with larger-than-normal palatine tonsils that cause difficulties

Tonsillectomy in Children
Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in children. It provides significant benefits, particularly for children who frequently have sore throats, experience snoring and breathing pauses at night, or suffer from persistent insomnia and fatigue. Enlarged and inflamed palatine tonsils can both slow physical development in children and negatively affect their daily activities.
After surgery, children may experience:

  • More comfortable sleep and quieter breathing,
  • A significant reduction in frequent throat infections,
  • Improved overall activity level and mood.

Parents’ proper adherence to the doctor’s instructions after surgery, along with appropriate nutrition and rest for the child, helps speed up recovery.
