Olfactory Disorders
The sense of smell is one of the important functions of the respiratory system and is essential for understanding the environment, perceiving the taste of food, and identifying environmental hazards (such as fire or gas leaks). However, this function can sometimes be impaired, leading to olfactory disorders. Types of olfactory disorders:
- Anosmia – complete loss of the sense of smell. It occurs as a result of damage to the nose or the parts of the brain responsible for the sense of smell.
- Hyposmia – a reduced sense of smell, meaning that odors that were previously perceived normally are now detected more weakly.
- Cacosmia – perception of distorted or unpleasant odors. Sometimes, although the patient continues to perceive odors, those odors are not actually present in the environment.
Causes of olfactory disorders:
Loss of the sense of smell may be caused by various factors. These include nasal congestion, nasal polyps, sinusitis, allergic reactions, viral infections (especially the common cold and influenza), nerve disorders, and trauma. In some cases, brain diseases and neurological disorders may also cause loss of the sense of smell.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Treatment of olfactory disorders is based on the underlying cause. If the cause is an infection or inflammation, treatment is usually provided with antibiotics, antiviral medications, or nasal sprays. If the problem is related to nasal polyps or sinus conditions, treatment may involve surgery or physiotherapy.
